Why a Good Tour Operator Talks to You Before Sending a Quote
A quote sent without a single question is usually a template. Here is why a good Sri Lanka tour operator speaks to you first.
You send a message: “10 days in Sri Lanka, 2 adults, how much?”
Twenty minutes later a PDF lands in your inbox. Beautiful photos. Day 1, Negombo. Day 2, Sigiriya. A price at the bottom.
It looks great. It is also the same PDF fifty other people got this month.
The problem with instant quotes
Sri Lanka is small on the map and big on the road. The same 10 days can be a slow, food-focused trip through tea country, or a flat-out dash from one famous place to the next. The price, the hotels and the drive times change completely depending on which you want.
A quote that arrives before anyone has asked you a question cannot know which trip you want. So it quietly assumes the average one.
What a good operator asks first
- Who is travelling? Couple, family with kids, grandparents, solo?
- When? Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, so the best route changes with the month.
- What pace? Some people want a new place every night. Others want three nights in one spot and a book.
- What are you curious about? Wildlife, temples, hikes, beaches, food, tea?
- How do you like to eat? Street food and local spots, or hotel restaurants?
- What kind of stays? Five-star, boutique, or a family-run guesthouse?
- What is your budget range? Not to upsell you, but to design something that actually fits.
- Anything you have already seen or want to skip?
What the conversation should feel like
A quick call or WhatsApp chat. Some questions. Some honest pushback, like “that is too much driving for one day” or “you will love Ella but give it two nights, not one.”
If nobody ever tells you no, they are probably just selling you.
What to be wary of
- Prices sent within minutes with no questions
- “Best price guaranteed” before they know your dates
- Fixed packages with fixed hotel lists
- No mention of drive times or how long you will spend in the car
What you can do as a traveller
Help us help you. Tell us what you actually want, even if it is vague. “We love food and hate crowds” is more useful than a list of 14 landmarks.
How we do it
We do not do pre-set packages. Every trip starts with a conversation, and we build from there.
Ready to talk? Message us on WhatsApp and tell us what you are curious about.
