Solo Female Travel in Sri Lanka: An Honest Guide
Many women travel through Sri Lanka alone and have wonderful trips. People are kind, the food is great, and it is easy to meet other travellers.
An honest guide also means telling you that it is not hassle-free. Here is what to expect and how to handle it.
What to expect
Most of the time, you will be treated with warmth and curiosity. Occasionally you may get unwanted attention: staring, comments, or, in crowded places like buses, unwanted touching.
This does not happen to everyone, and it does not mean you should not come. It means a bit of preparation helps.
Getting around
- Private driver: Often the easiest and most comfortable option for solo women. Ask about the driver, check reviews and share his details with someone at home.
- Ride apps and tuk-tuks: In the cities, ride apps can be more comfortable than negotiating. Share your trip with a friend.
- Trains: Great views and usually fine in the daytime. Keep your bag close. Try to travel during the day.
- Buses: Cheap and local, and the most likely place for unwanted touching. If you take one, stay near the front or sit by a woman or family.
Where to stay
Choose places with strong recent reviews from other solo women. Family-run guesthouses are often very welcoming. Look for reviews mentioning safety, helpful hosts and good locks. Arrive in daylight when you can.
What to wear
- At temples and mosques, cover shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf.
- At tourist beaches, swimwear is normal.
- Wear what makes you comfortable, but it helps to match the setting.
Practical safety tips
- Share your plans and location with someone at home.
- Keep a local SIM and a charged phone.
- Save the police emergency number, 119.
- Be careful with alcohol and with who you share your accommodation details with.
- Say no clearly and firmly. You do not need to be polite to someone making you uncomfortable.
- Trust your gut. If a situation feels wrong, leave.
Meeting people
Solo travel in Sri Lanka rarely means being alone. Guesthouses, cooking classes, group hikes and the Ella train are all easy places to meet people.
