Sri Lanka in 14 Days: The Version With Room to Breathe

Fourteen days is where Sri Lanka starts to feel like a trip and not a sprint.

You can add the ancient cities properly, spend extra time in the hills, and finish with a few real beach days. This itinerary builds on our 10-day route and adds the places we think deserve more time.

Best for: travellers who want depth, not just highlights. Pace: relaxed to moderate.

Days 1 to 3: Arrive and the ancient cities

  • Day 1: Arrive and head to Sigiriya and rest up. Have your first egg hopper
  • Day 2: Visit the Dambulla Cave temples and head for a jeep safari to Minneriya for the elephants
  • Day 3: Climb Sigiriya or Pidurangala at first light, then head for a Village Safari and rest up

Days 4 to 6: Wildlife, then Kandy

  • Day 4: Drive to Kandy. Spend some time on the Kandy lake. Evening at the Temple of the Tooth.
  • Day 5: A slow Kandy day. [botanical gardens, local market, lake walk.]

Days 6 to 9: Tea country and Ella

  • Day 6: Drive to Nuwara Eliya. Visit a tea estate. Visit Lake gregory and the strawberry farms
  • Day 7: Take the train to Ella. Book early. Rest up in Ella
  • Day 8: A full day in Ella: Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arches Bridge, and a long lunch. And maybe a cooking class
  • Day 9: An adventurous day in Ella: Sunrise or Sunset Yoga, ATV rides, Zip Lines, and a massage.

Days 10 to 11: Wildlife in the south

  • Day 10: Drive to Yala for and rest up
  • Day 11: Early Leopard safari at Yala, then continue to the coast.

Days 12 to 14: Beach, Galle and home

  • Day 12: Beach day in Mirissa or Weligama. Surf lesson, whale watching in season, or nothing at all.
  • Day 13: Beach day in Mirissa or Weligama.
  • Day 14: Galle Fort, with lunch and a slow walk on the ramparts.Transfer to the airport with plenty of time.

What the extra four days give you

Two more nights in the Cultural Triangle, a proper rest day in Kandy, a separate Udawalawe stop, and a real beach day. That is the difference between seeing Sri Lanka and settling into it.

Swaps to consider

  • Want more beach? Swap Kandy’s slow day for an extra coastal night.
  • Love hiking? Add a Horton Plains
  • Travelling with kids? Shorten the drives and skip one of the early starts.

Sri Lanka in 10 Days: An Itinerary That Does Not Rush You

Ten days is enough to see a lot of Sri Lanka. It is not enough to see all of it, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you a checklist.

This route covers the classics: ancient sites, hill country, wildlife and the south coast. It keeps the driving realistic and leaves room for tea stops, because that is how it is done here.

Best for: first-timers who want a bit of everything. Pace: moderate.

Day 1: Arrive and ease in to Sigiriya

Drive into the Cultural Triangle. Stop at the Dambulla cave temples on the way. Settle in near Sigiriya.

Have your first egg hopper.

Day 2: Sigiriya and Safari

Climb Sigiriya or its neighbour Pidurangala early, before the heat and crowds. In the afternoon, go on a jeep safari at Minneriya for elephants (best in the dry season, so check the month).

Day 3: Kandy

Drive to Kandy. Visit the Temple of the Tooth in the evening. Visit the Kandy Lake

Day 4: Into tea country

Head up to Nuwara Eliya. It is cooler, greener and feels a little British, in a way that is slightly surreal. Visit a tea factory and drink the tea.

Day 5: The Ella train

Take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella, one of the most famous train rides in the world. Tickets can sell out, so book early. Arrive in Ella for sunset.

Day 6: Ella, slowly

Walk Little Adam’s Peak, see the Nine Arches Bridge (go when it is quiet, not train time), and spend the afternoon in a cafe. Do not overschedule this day.

Day 7: Yala

Drive down to the Yala area. Early the next morning is the best time for leopards, so it is worth staying close.

Day 8: Safari and the south coast

Do an early safari, then drive to the coast near Mirissa or Weligama. Warm water, beach, fresh seafood. If it is whale season, you can book a whale watching trip.

Day 9: Relaxed on the Beach

Chill on the Southern beaches, have a surf lesson, get a scuba diving session in.

Day 10: Galle and home

Walk the Galle Fort ramparts in the morning, have a last kottu, then take the expressway to the airport. [Add drive time and a buffer recommendation before flights.]

Where we would slow down

If you want a more relaxed trip, cut Nuwara Eliya and give Ella three nights, or drop the Yala safari and add a beach day.
